Chornobyl Zone: Prypiat ghost town 4

Prypiat, Ukraine. Vlodya is looking at the entrance to the apartment building he used to live in. Normally, going here would be dangerous. But he has used instruments to determine the path and the apartment are not dangerous.

Prypiat was the city nearest to Chornobyl, created to house the nuclear plant workers. [link] It had about 50,000 people in 1986 at the time of the disaster. Included in that number were Vlodya, his wife, and many of his friends. I met quite a few people from there. Prypiat is now completely vacant. Like everywhere in the Zone, there are places which are still dangerously radioactive. To be safe you need to stay on the roads.

After the Chornobyl disaster, a huge section of Ukraine was evacuated. This is called the Chornobyl Zone. To enter the Zone you have to pass by an armed guard who checks your papers to make sure you have the proper clearances and permission to enter.

By the way, I spell it Chornobyl because that is the Ukrainian pronunciation. Chernobyl is a Russification of the name.
